 WELCOME TO ATLANTA WAND
Atlanta WAND is the local chapter of a national organization that seeks to channel women's voices into a powerful movement for change. WAND was founded as Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament in 1982 by Helen Caldicott, long-time anti-nuclear activist and founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility.
The name was later changed to Women's Action for New Directions as we broadened our mission and sought to connect the dots between excessive military spending and unmet human and environmental needs. The two issues closest to our hearts are nuclear non-proliferation and re-writing the federal budget from the perspectives of progressive women.
To these ends, Atlanta WAND organizes monthly meetings, featuring critical issues, which end with taking action.

A farewell to Ed Arnold
A dedicated campaigner for a better world, and especially against nuclear weapons and nuclear power, Atlanta WAND salutes Ed Arnold, who died on June 21, 2008 of AMML (acute myelomonocytic leukemia). He was a great member and passionate activist, working not only with Atlanta WAND, but also Physicians for Social Responsibility.
Read an article in the AJC about Ed's life and work here.

o Moore's Ford Bridge in Monroe, GA was the site of the last known mob lynchings in the United States. Each year the Moore's Ford Memorial Committee, Inc., Atlanta WAND and Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials work together to organize a reenactment the sad and historical event in order to call attention to the lack of prosecution for these terrible murders. We are dedicated to supporting the Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act for those affected by acts of violence and discrimination. Please help us continue this important tradition by volunteering!

Call-in to make sure your member of Congress knows there is strong opposition to military action against Iran in his or her district.
CALL NOW, before any irreversible steps are taken, is the time for us to speak out against any U.S./Israeli military attack on Iran. Call the Capitol Hill switchboard at 202-224-3121 or click here to look up the direct numbers for your representative's DC and local offices.
Pressure on Congress is critical right now as it considers H.Con.Res. 362. 102 House Democrats and 117 Republicans have cosponsored a resolution against Iran that demands President Bush "initiate an international effort" to impose a land, sea, and air blockade on Iran to prevent it from importing gasoline and to inspect all cargo entering or leaving Iran. Imposing such a blockade without UN authority could be widely construed as an act of war.
PLANT VOGTLE OPPOSITION!
COMMENTS STILL BEING ACCEPTED
The first step Georgia utilities are taking to try to get federal approval to build new nuclear reactors along the Savannah River is to apply for an “early site permit.” If the permit is issued, concerns such as water, land, public health, and safety cannot be brought up again even if we learn new information. If approved, this permit essentially allows the Southern Company and its utility partners in Georgia to use the permit at any time for up to 20 years in any future applications with the NRC. Together, Atlanta WAND, Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, Center for a Sustainable Coast, Savannah Riverkeeper, and Southern Alliance for Clean Energy legally challenged the permit.
